Have I mentioned that I really like Pushing Daisies? Seems I have, and here I am, once again, touting the crap out of it (though for once something I like is getting good ratings, so it should stick around).
Ah Halloween, Ned’s got an aversion, because it’s the day his father left him for a new wife and family. Yes, it’s sad, but with Jim Dale telling it to us in rhyme, and with young Ned and young Digby dressed as ghosts (oh my God, the puppy as a ghost!!!), it’s super sweet too.
I worried at first that the show would become rote, that each week would be just another murder for hire, but they have done a great job of avoiding it. Sure, this week was another mystery to be solved, but this time Olive initiated the case, Ned went off on a personal journey, and Olive and Chuck finally bonded. Also, they’ve managed to keep the murders quirky enough to feel fresh, it’s certainly not just another crime solving show. Read the rest of this entry »
I had a phone interview with Shalim Ortiz, one of the new cast members of Heroes, on Friday morning. He’s super sweet. It was scheduled for 8.30am, so I had to get up at 7, just to sound human. I’m not an early riser, but I had figured out most of the questions ahead of time, and you can’t hear my voice in transcript, so here goes:
Me: I went to look you up to research you, and your star meter* is number five! Congratulations.
Shalim: Thank you thank you.
Me: You’re hot!
Shalim: God, yeah, I learned what a star meter was when all this project kicked in, because I wasn’t very familiar, but, yeah, I hear that’s pretty cool. It’s a big show I guess.
Me: Well, out of a lots and lots and lots of actors, it’s certainly not bad.
Shalim: Yeah, I caught up on season one not too long ago and I completely understand why it would have so many followers. It’s a very well done show.
I’m crafty, but these are amazing! Patricia Waller is a German artist who makes sculptures out of yarn, knitting and crocheting. I want to own them all; as if I could afford them.
Another stellar episode of Pushing Daisies, and the good news is, ABC knows a good thing. Variety reported today that it has been picked up through the spring. Hooray!
Favorite moments this week include: the opening with Digby the dog (I’m a sucker for Goldens); the bedazzled, taxidermy-ed pigeon; a literal one armed bandit which allowed Chai McBride to say “put your hand up;” a decades old prison love affair between Lefty Lem (Dash Mihok) and Elsita (Jayma Mays, who played Charlie on Heroes and plays a different character named Charlie on Ugly Betty); and my favorite moment, Kristen Chenoweth and Ellen Greene singing They Might Be Giants’ “Birdhouse in Your Soul.” I only wish the musical number had been longer.
Hmm, Kristen Chenoweth in my favorite moments again, I’m seeing a pattern here. For me, it might as well be Pushing Chenoweth.
Adidas has made a series of short films for their Adicolor line, each one a different color. I like pink, red, and black best (although my Adicolors are white).
Memo to the music department at Cane: Santana has recorded more than one song; and if you’re going for “ethnic,” why not music recorded by Cuban artists?
The new print is available at noon today from Gallery1988’s Crazy 4 Cult show. This month’s is Nathan Ota’s “Candy Colored Clown,” inspired by the film Blue Velvet.
Starting to see TV spots for Beowulf, the new Zemeckis CGI film. Really, and more importantly, the new Neil Gaiman scripted CGI film. Woo hoo, go Neil go! I can’t wait for all these guys and kids to love the film of the book they hated in high school. Far more ironic than rain on your wedding day.
NBC has shoved Jerry Seinfeld’s Bee Movie so far down my throat, I’m ready to vomit. Daily Bee reports on ET, guest spots on shows, promos during ad breaks, the list goes on. I probably wouldn’t have seen the the damn thing anyway, but now I’ll Bee sure to miss it.
Follow up note: Viva Lauglin has been canceled after only two terrible episodes.
They say we don’t have seasons here in LA, but I know that not long before summer it was Pilot Season, and this is surely Fire Season. Jeepers! I know you’ve all seen this on the news, but it’s cri-zazy, yo! From the top of Runyon, it’s too hazy to see much to the west, and in Santa Monica it’s smoky. This is why I live on the East Side, not as much fire. We still have to deal with the threat of quakes, but not as much fire… Which reminds me, I must tell my landlord that there’s a lot of new cracks in my dry wall, due to recent seismic activities.
But I digress.
Malibu is on fire; celebrities are displaced. Olivia Newton-John has had to evacuate as has Mel Gibson. My sympathies go out to Olivia Newton-John.
