A Lovely Cage

June 28, 2009

I’m in NYC at my Dad’s place.  I was looking at the downstairs, livingroom bookcase and came across a book from the mid 70’s on Duchamp.  I gave it a flip through, as I’ve always liked the readymades, and came across this poem, by Cage, on Duchamp:

let Me

I will Carry it for you.

Are you looking for a great summer read? Have a kid you’re trying to hook on a book? Loved Harry Potter, thought Twilight was eh, but you’re willing to suspend belief? Well I’ve got your summer series right here. Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan.  I’m late jumping on this band wagon, the fifth and final book in the series was just published, but hey, now we don’t have to wait for the next one.  I’ve read them back to back to back, great summer page turners.

I don’t want to say too much, because there are too many good reveals in the first book, The Lightning Theif, and I don’t want to spoil them.  I’ll just say that it’s a modern take on Greek Mythology, has a male protagonist – for all you parents of boys who won’t read “girl” books – with a female best friend, is fast paced and fun, and will make you want to go pick up a copy of D’Aulaire for nostalga’s sake.  And if you’re not nostalgic for it because you never had it, go treat yourself!

Zee Avi!!! Ghezuntite.

June 11, 2009

Are you listening to Zee Avi?  Why not? She’s great, jazzy, poppy, sweet. A friend said it’s the kind of stuff I would sing, if I could sing, so there’s that.  She’s one of those artists who’s so good businesses are using her music out of context for commercials. There’s a Walmart ad for summer with her la-la-la-ing, and it’s all summertime lazy day, but it’s actually from a song called Poppy, about how her boyfriend became addicted to heroine.  Ah summer.

Kate Flannery Redux

February 3, 2009

img_0416I used to work for a fansite which is now defunct, and while there I taped an interview with Kate Flannery, Meredith on The Office.  It occurs to me now that the site is dark the interview is nowhere on the web, so, to that end… here it is in transcript form. She’s a pretty funny and cool lady, and super talented. If you’re not already a fan, go check out The Lampshades; you’ll thank yourself for doing so.

Schinders Hi, I’m Schinders and I’m here with Kate Flannery, Meredith, on The Office.  Knowing that we are FanLib, the first thing I want to ask you is, what are you a fan of?
Kate I am a fan of the fans.  I like the fans. I talk to the fans. We all have these MySpace pages that we started the second season of The Office, only because our computers didn’t work the first season. And it’s actually been kind of cool to talk to people that are – actually having access to the people that they are admiring.  I mean I wish I’d have access – I still don’t even though I’m on the Office (laughs) but it’s kind of interesting.  I actually was a really big fan of Annie when I was a kid, and it’s so funny I just saw that documentary which is called … Life After Tomorrow, which  sounds like a soap opera – and it’s all these girls that I admired when I was a kid and it’s their lives now which is kind of a strange mix of not what anybody expected… and … it’s just really really weird – it’s like a weird thing – so it’s kind of a full circle for me.  I don’t know why I  mentioned that first, but I was always obsessed with that show so I wish I would have had the access back then that the kids today have now. There’s an embroidery show next month in NYC called Forget Me Not at Gallery Hanahou, 611 Bway, suite 730. Opening reception: February 6th, 6-8 pm; the images I’ve seen are great. Here’s what’s making me desirous:

Beastie Boy Aht Stah!

January 20, 2009

I’ve been remiss (and a bit fermished), but I finally wanted to post pics from the show, which was a rousing success.  The show itself was huge – you could barely move, it was like a night club – and both my pieces sold the first night.  Hooray!  They’ve asked me to participate in the summer show, Crazy4Cult, so… Look out world, here comes the needlepoint!

Okay, that said, in no particular order, here’s a bunch of pictures of the show and work from the show besides mine.  If you want to, you can go back and see what I did. The show is still up at Gallery 1988 (7020 Melrose) and will be on display through January 29th. And now, with no further ado… Under the Influence: The Official Art Tribute to the Beastie Boys!

The Girl Is Crafty Like Ice is Cold

January 3, 2009

entry_r1_c1So I’ve been blathering about this in person, but I wanted to post here.  There’s another super cool show coming up at Gallery1988, and (drum roll please) I have a couple of pieces in it.  Yep, my very first gallery showing; it’s a group show, but still, and it’s a cool ass group show at a cool ass gallery.  The show is all art based on the Beastie Boys, can you believe it?

The conversation, when they asked me to participate went a little like this:

Gallerist: So I’ve seen your work and it’s pretty cool.  I was thinking we’d invite you into a group show.

Me: (acting cool, but not pulling it off) Oh, great.  Do you know any themes of shows for the next six to nine months?

Gallerist: Yeah, I just got off the phone with Adam Yauch and we’ve got final permission to do a Beastie Boys show.

Me: Beastie Boys??

Gallerist: Yeah, but I can’t promise they’ll be here.

Me: THEY’LL BE HERE??

Gallerist: I said I can’t promise…

So I made two pieces.  The first is a needlepoint of Cookie Puss, in honor of their first 12″.  Framed the piece is 12″x15″

The other piece is a straight up portrait of the BBoys; framed it’s 11″x11″.

The opening is this Thursday night, January 8th, from 7-11pm at Gallery 1988, 7020 Melrose Ave, 90038, and the show runs through the 29th.  Hope to see you there.

The Most Disturbing Thing I’ve Seen Recently

December 16, 2008

This is just so creepy weird on so many levels.  I kinda love it and at the same time my skin crawls.

plushiefamilychristmas

It’s the holidays, it’s a family, it’s anatomically correct, the little girl is touching dad in a way she never should, and check out the footwear… just so many things wrong with this.  Oof.  Merry merry everyone.

The Gift For The Fashionable Child Who Has Everything

December 6, 2008

My friend Christine is giving her son his first Teddy Bear for xmas, so of course it will be a Steiff. We had a whole discussion of soft vs. articulated, how one shouldn’t cut the ear tags (like my mother did), and favorite Steiffs of our childhood. She was surfing the interwebs while we chatted and found this Steiff Bear from Neiman Marcus- it’s just too, too.

And here’s Karl with his bear:
