This Saturday afternoon, February 27th, is the final day of Stitch Fetish 4 at the Hive Gallery (open 1-6, Wed-Sat). Not only is it your last day to come downtown and see the show in person, we’re having a panel discussion on Gender and Sexuality in Stitch (at 3:30pm) and many of the (local) artists will be in attendance.

If you’re not in the LA area you can stream live – you’ll have to download Periscope and then friend or follow @thehivegallery – and it will be archived online after the fact to watch. I believe streaming live will give you the opportunity to write in questions during the Q&A portion of the panel.

Moderated by curator, Ellen Schinderman (me), the panel participants are: Billy Kheel (who’s just had a solo show in Denver), Emma Rose Laughlin (who was in Stitch Fetish 3 and is a current featured artist at The Hive), past Stitch Fetish artist Luke Haynes (who’s very busy with The Log Cabins of Donald Judd, a show of 50 quilts), and Ashley V Blalock, a multi talented artist and lecturer at California State University, San Bernardino.

This year’s show has been fantastic. There’s some amazing works still available, so come down and see them this week or check it out online. But I hope to see you Saturday, online or in person!

That’s right… it’s back! Stitch Fetish 3 at the Hive Gallery in Downtown, Los Angeles!!!

Screen Shot 2014-06-17 at 12.54.02 PM

Stitch Fetish 3, at The Hive Gallery, will continue to explore the art of the stitch (a rite and fetish unto itself), revealing the secrets, desires, and obsessions lurking in the mind of the artist.  Works of erotica and titillation! Works of dark fantasy and longing.  Works of secrets never told, but long kept.

Artists, please submit stitchy works of erotica and fetish – feel free to interpret this theme widely.

Makers of all varieties of stitched work are encouraged to submit: knitting, crochet, embroidery (machine, free hand, black work, crewel….), needlepoint, cross-stitch, quilting, plush, appliqué, tapestry, needlefelting (i know it’s not stitched, but there’s needles and often blood, so it fully counts!), beading, mixed media (where fiber is a main componant)… and any other stitchy forms i’ve forgotten (or woven or threaded or poked), please submit!

Please note we are looking for contemporary interpretations of theme and medum.

Submission Details: Eligibility: All artists over 18 are eligible. Work can utilize any medium but must primarily use stitching (or fiber). Works should be no larger than 24”x24” framed (unless you contact me specifically). Works must be wall mountable and ready to hang – sculptural pieces should be no bigger than 24″ at their largest dimension (again, unless you contact me specifically). Work must be original and created after 2012.

For submission dates, details, and entry links, please go HERE.

Well, it’s a bit of a rainy day here in LA, but something you could do to brighten your afternoon is get downtown to see Stitch Fetish 2 on it’s final day open!  Wow, did February fly by! Lots of wonderful times at the show, time spent working with the artists, time spent wrangling Wilkinson… and lots of amazing art work! Thanks to all who came, made, bought, blogged…. everything. You all rock my socks off!!

Tonight I’ll be at Flower Pepper Gallery for The Season of Spring, which has gotten mass press and looks to be a crazy show. The talent is off the hook – I’m so honored to be on the list of artists in the show – and the previews I’ve seen are fantastic. The show’s cash and carry, so if you’re wanting an affordable piece by potentially an artist you adore, come early!!

Finally, there’s some new ladies in my store, Lenore and Blanche; lovely, lovely ladies for sale.

I shared this piece during the promotion of Stitch Fetish, but, as it’s still available, I’m sharing it again, plus, it’s too bad ass not to mention one more time: it’s Kevin Muth’s (aka Dirty Pillowz’s) amazing, erotic string art. But wait, there’s more!! We also have kits for sale! If you’re more of a DIY-er, you can make this phenomenal, neon creation for your very self!! Ladies and gents, I give you dirty string art (and way too many exclamation points, sorry, I get excited)!

Only today and tomorrow left to see the show in person; if you’re downtown, swing by the Hive!

Or I would be if I didn’t remember to mention that Hine Mizushima‘s (phenomenal) piece is still available! One of the fun things about curating Stitch Fetish is getting artists who don’t normally make erotica to think outside of the box. And boy, do I love Hine’s take on the call for work. It fits right in with her usually adorable works, but is so right on target for the fetishy goodness of the show. Here’s her piece and some details, because the definition she gets needle felting needs to be seen closely!

460I’ve been posting lots of great art that’s still available from Stitch Fetish 2, and I will continue to do so, but I wanted to share some of the super nice press the show and I have gotten in the last month. I’m so appreciative to everyone who took the time to come down, take photos, ask questions, be in touch, and write such nice things! Big thanks to Cat Doss, Rick Galiher, Rebecca Rose, and Shana Nys Dambrot; you all rock my socks off!!

Cat’s piece for the Los Angeles Post Examiner.

Rick’s piece for Platinum Cheese.

Rebecca’s piece for Crafthaus.

and Shana’s piece on her personal tumble.

This has been a terrific month and show (three more days to get over to the Hive!) and there’s so much good on the horizon. Just wanted to stop and thank some of the people who are helping, pushing, and inspiring me to work all the harder along the way.

Don’t forget, Saturday night is the opening of the Season of Spring at Flower Pepper Gallery. There’s previews on line (for access, email Flower Pepper Gallery at; the work is tremendous.

Robert Marbury‘s work is so great: smart, funny, on point. Robert may be best known for his work in the art taxidermy world, he’s the curator of  the biennial Rogue Taxidermy show and has a recent book out on the subject, but he’s also known for beard wearing (his presidential trading cards are amazing), odd photo taking, and cross stitch. Though some of  his work sold at the opening of Stitch Fetish 2, there are still several very funny pieces of his available in the show.

Today’s featured work is by Amy Goldsmith Sheridan aka Supervelma. Amy is best known for her stitched tweets and pop culture stitches, but created a darkly sexy narrative for this year’s Stitch Fetish show, “Afternoon Delight.”

An artist in Stitch Fetish 2 who I’m lucky enough to call friend as well as peer is Meghan Willis (I’m even lucky enough to own one of her gorgeous pieces). Meghan works from photo shoots she and her husband co-create, and makes beautiful erotica embroideries from the images. Her stitching is lovely and delicate, and like Judith Pudden, Meghan is a master at applique, but hers is done with hand painted leather, which gives her work a dimensionality that is amazing.

A project Meghan has been working on of late is her “Accoutrements” series, three pieces of which are in Stitch Fetish 2. Meghan asks her models to bring their favorite “toy” to the photo shoot, and then, using the original source material, hand stitches the models and hand painted leather pieces onto linen.

Available in the show are:

A couple of artists, who are new on the scene, blew me away by almost selling out opening night of Stitch Fetish: Judith Pudden, with her gorgeous embroidery and Japanese paper applique pieces, and Matthew Monthei with his witty, cross stitched, beard porn. They are both talented emerging artists, and there are only a couple (very affordable) pieces left from each of them. Get in while the getting is good!

Here’s the last piece available from Judith:

As promised, I’m going to be posting the works from Stitch Fetish 2 on line until the show closes, so, true to my word, here’s today’s piece of magnificence: “Pleasuremax,” by Erin M. Riley. Erin’s art is phenomenal, true tapestry, woven on a loom; woven people!!

The piece measures 23″x17″ and is $500.

Screen Shot 2014-02-20 at 10.05.54 AM

Erin’s another fast rising contemporary artist, featured in the current issue of Juxtapoz, and in their current group show in San Francisco. Erin has won too many awards, and has had too many residencies and shows around the world to list here, but have a look at her super impressive cv.

An amazing chance to own a very affordable piece by an artist who will not stay affordable for long.
